The season five 'American Idol' champ will present free shows at Bally?s Bikini Beach Bar and Blue Martini Lounge starting July 18

When he won the fifth season of American Idol in 2005, Taylor Hicks knew that the white-hot spotlight of instant fame would not last, but he was prepared. After all, he had been a working musician for more than a decade when he won the title over a particularly strong group of performers including Katherine McPhee, Chris Daughtry, Elliott Yasmin and Kellie Pickler.

Hicks is currently under contract with Caesars Entertainment and has a regular gig at the Paris Las Vegas where the top ticket price is $70. As part of a tour of other Caesars properties across the country, Hicks takes up residence at Bally?s Blue Martini Lounge and Bikini Beach Bar Thursday to Saturday July 18-20 and July 25-27, doing a one-hour set from 10-11pm at the Blue Martini and performing at 1-2pm Friday and Saturday both weekends at the Bikini Beach Bar. All the shows are free but seating is limited and you must be at least 21 to attend.

You can bet the most eager fans will be members of his legendary fan base known as the Soul Patrol, in honor of Hicks? blue-eyed soul style of blues and rock. Atlantic City Weekly had the opportunity to chat with Hicks this week about his casino tour.

When you won American Idol, you understood that the ?15 minutes of fame? would not last and more than most contestants you were prepared for that.

I?ve always wanted to be a career artist and entertainer. I knew that at a very early age. I started performing professionally at 17. Idol for me was the ten-year overnight success story. I was blessed to have that Idol platform when it was the only game in town.

You are currently touring other Caesars Entertainment properties across the country.

Under that wonderful umbrella of Caesars Entertainment I get to travel to a lot of their sister properties and Bally?s in Atlantic City was the perfect fit.

Tell us about the music you will be presenting in your Atlantic City shows.

A lot of the music is favorites from Idol and some of the music from my albums and a couple of Vegas show tunes. And I?ll be working in some new material from the upcoming country album that I?m working on in Nashville.
