The Director of Development Marketing and Communications enables Medicine & Biological Sciences Development?s (MBSD) fundraising success by conceptualizing, implementing, project-managing, and supervising marketing efforts and communication modes that inspire and motivate charitable contributions. S/he collaborates with the Associate Vice President (AVP) to conceptualize and recommend fitting strategies.

S/he is responsible for ensuring the Development Marketing and Communications (DMC) team implements tactics and strategies to ensure MBSD has significant and positive brand awareness for both the current campaigns and the impact of past fundraising. It is important to note that in FY13 MBSD will be in the silent phase of a $1B-plus campaign. The Marketing and Communications Plan s/he contributes to and implements will be a key component of MBSD?s success in raising over $1B; increasing gifts of current donors and identifying new constituencies. Through his/her ongoing strategic, tactical, and material contributions, the Director plays a substantive role in directing and aiding the Team to meet the goals mentioned here.

The Director is the primary editor for all mass communications and for many individual and specialized communications. Because of this responsibility, s/he is responsible for keeping fully informed of: the fundraising priorities of the campaigns; and institutional messages from the University of Chicago Medicine(UCM) Communications and Marketing, MBSD, University Alumni Relations & Development and University Marketing and Communications.

The Director oversees the work of a team of designers and writers who are the DMC Team and implement marketing and communication efforts. Of particular note: S/he oversees the work of the Senior Graphic Designer who is charged with evaluating, envisioning, and delivering a visionary and unified aesthetic style. S/he is the client manager and primary contact for all projects and materials.

The Director manages the operations of the DMC team including: leading the team in Annual (business) Planning; leading the team in creating, monitoring and managing the Annual Fiscal Year Budget; identifying agendas and outcomes for regular team and sub- team meetings; and upholding MBSD HR Best Practices. S/he represents the team in departmental and cross departmental meetings to present priorities and initiatives.

His/her closest partnerships beyond his/her staff are Individual Giving Campaign Teams, Principal Gifts, and Donor Relations Teams, as well as the UChicago Medicine Marketing/Communications office.

Project Management and Editing 30%

The Director assigns projects (writing, design, web, and multimedia) to his/her team. S/he manages staff, implements project management tools and techniques, coordinates efforts across the DMC Team, and evaluates work product and productivity, to meet deadlines and expectations for quality, style, and content.

It is optimal that the team be managed to meet DMC goals. However, as the Director is ultimately responsible for meeting the goals of quality, style, content and agreed upon deadline date, s/he may from time to time find it necessary to fulfill tactical and material responsibilities of the Team?s projects.

She ensures that all University-wide materials and communications maintain MBSD style guidelines when using MBSD materials, logos, tag lines, etc., or when referencing MBSD. Equally important, she reviews University-wide materials to ensure that MBSD?s DMC Team?s efforts are maximized and optimized.

Optimizing and Marketing MBSD?s DMC Team 20%

The Director is the client liaison for all projects and products of the DMC team. S/he acts as a collaborator and consultant to Campaign Teams in developing integrated communications plans for campaign priorities and for MBSD programmatic initiatives. In order to fulfill this role, s/he will have a working familiarity with the Annual (business) Plans of all MBSD Teams. In particular, s/he has the greatest working knowledge and strategic understanding of the Principal Gift, Individual Giving, Donor Relations, and Strategic Constituencies Teams? plans. S/he identifies opportunities to add value to fundraising by regular participation in Prospect & Trustee Strategy, Principal Gifts Strategy, and other intra-team meetings as appropriate.

Planning and Budget 20%

Following the development of an Annual (business) Plan, the Director develops an MBSD-wide annual Marketing/Communications Plan in support of Campaign objectives and Annual Plan goals. S/he also creates a Communications calendar. Throughout each year, s/he monitors progress and ensures that all plans and projects outlined on this calendar are fulfilled. S/he works with multiple MBSD and external teams to develop and implement these Plans.

S/he envisions, develops, and implements a system whereby DMC members build understanding and awareness about key fundraising priorities. S/he is responsible for the continuous improvement in processes. Related goals include, but are not limited to: raising standards, improving efficiency and effectiveness.

S/he manages and monitors the DMC Team budget.

Team Operations and Staff Management 30%

The Director manages the operations of the DMC team including: leading the team in Annual (business) Planning; leading the team in creating, monitoring and managing the Annual Fiscal Year Budget; identifying agendas and outcomes for regular team and sub- team meetings; and upholding MBSD HR Best Practices.

S/he supervises a team of up to 9 employees and s/he may have up to 6 direct reports. S/he is responsible for providing, supporting, and facilitating employees? orientation and training/development. S/he uses additional HR Best practices and organizational processes such as Early Employment Reviews, Performance Appraisals, and the Orientation Program as well as individualized conversations to coach and counsel employees in their job performance and career aspirations.
