Chrysler CEO calls out Romney over Jeep ads

Jacky Naegelen / Reuters

By Joseph Szczesny , The Detroit Bureau

Despite declaring his desire to stay out of this year?s presidential battle, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has found himself drawn into the fray as he responded to a series of comments and political ads by GOP contender Mitt Romney, which the CEO called "inaccurate."

The Italian-born Marchionne made it clear in a note sent to Chrysler employees that statements and advertising by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney suggesting the company was moving Jeep production from its assembly complex in Toledo, Ohio, to China was simply not true.

?Chrysler Group?s production plans for the Jeep brand have become the focus of public debate,? the Chrysler CEO said in the statement that was also released to the media.

The domestic auto industry has become a central topic of debate between President Barack Obama, who approved the largest portion of an $84 billion government bailout of Chrysler and General Motors, and his Republican rival ? Romney arguing against the rescue effort but also trying to claim he helped to save the two makers by demanding a ?structured? bankruptcy.

?For his part, Marchionne has tried to sidestep the ongoing debate, and in his note he continued to insist he wanted to avoid getting involved in politics, insisting, ?I?m the furthest things from a politician. I manufacture and sell cars.?

But the latest flap over the Detroit makers has become a major campaign issue as candidates Obama and Romney square off over Ohio, a state considered by many likely to help determine who will occupy the White House after next January?s inauguration.

Romney has begun running ads in Ohio stating Chrysler planned to move Jeep production to China. Analysts described the ads as part of Romney?s efforts to pry the state?s pivotal 18 electoral votes from President Barack Obama.

Obama?s support of the 2009 auto bailout has been central to his effort to line up support in Ohio, particularly among blue-collar workers.

?I feel obliged to unambiguously restate our position: Jeep production will not be moved from the United States to China,? he continued. ?Jeep assembly lines will remain in operation in the United States and will constitute the backbone of the brand. ? It is inaccurate to suggest anything different.?

In contradicting the assertions in the Republican ads, Marchionne said North American production was critical to reaching Chrysler?s goal of selling 800,000 Jeep vehicles by 2014.

?In fact, U.S. production of our Jeep models has nearly tripled since 2009 in order to keep up with global demand,? he said.

The production of Jeep models is expected to be up 185% this year and, if anything, Chrysler has rapidly expanded production at the flagship Jeep plant in Detroit with the addition of second and third shifts since the 2009 Chrysler bailout.

Chrysler does plan to produce Jeeps in China but only for domestic market sales, the maker has said. Indeed, virtually every major automaker now operates production facilities in China ? critical to avoid hefty import duties.

The announcement by Chrysler that it would build Chinese Jeeps in that country was incorrectly reported, initially, and despite a later correction in the media, the Romney campaign has continued to run with the inaccurate information.

In his statement, Marchionne said: ?We also are investing to improve and expand our entire U.S. operations, including our Jeep facilities. The numbers tell the story. We will invest more than $1.7 billion to develop and produce the next generation Jeep SUV, the successor of the Jeep Liberty ? including $500 million directly to tool and expand our Toledo Assembly Complex and will be adding about 1,100 jobs on a second shift by 2013.?

?At our Jefferson North Assembly Plant, where we build the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we have created 2,000 jobs since June 2009 and have invested more than $1.8 billion.?

Marchionne said that with the increase in demand for Chrysler vehicles, especially Jeep branded vehicles, more than 11,200 U.S. jobs have been added since 2009.

Plants producing Jeep branded vehicles alone have seen the number of people invested in the success of the Jeep brand grow to more than 9,300 hourly jobs from 4,700. This will increase by an additional 1,100 as the Liberty successor, which will be produced in Toledo, is introduced for global distribution in the second quarter of 2013.

?We are working to establish a global enterprise and previously announced our intent to return Jeep production to China, the world?s largest auto market, in order to satisfy local market demand, which would not otherwise be accessible,? he said. ?Chrysler Group is interested in expanding the customer base for our award-winning Jeep vehicles, which can only be done by establishing local production. This will ultimately help bolster the Jeep brand, and solidify the resilience of U.S. jobs.?

He continued: ?Jeep is one of our truly global brands with uniquely American roots. This will never change. So much so that we committed that the iconic Wrangler nameplate, currently produced in our Toledo, Ohio plant, will never see full production outside the United States.?

Ironically, it was American Motors, the company once headed by Romney?s father George, that began building Jeeps in China in the early 1980s. Chrysler took over the venture in 1987 when it acquired AMC.

After Chrysler?s 1998 merger with Daimler-Benz, what was the Beijing Jeep venture became the center for the launch of production of Mercedes-Benz vehicles in China.

After Daimler sold Chrysler to Cerberus in 2007, the German automaker retained its ownership of the Beijing Jeep venture, which effectively shut Chrysler out of the China, which is now the largest automotive market in the world.

There has so far been no word from the Romney campaign as to whether they will correct or otherwise stop using the inaccurate information about Chrysler?s plans for Jeep.

Sleep duration affects hunger differently in men and women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that adults get could lead to reduced food intake, but the hormonal process differs between men and women.

"Restricting sleep in healthy, normal weight participants has limited effects on metabolic risk factors and may affect food intake regulating hormones differently in men and women," said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, PhD, FAHA, the study's principal investigator. "We were surprised by the lack of a significant effect of sleep on glucose and insulin, leptin, and sex differences in the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin and the satiety hormone GLP-1."

The study, appearing in the November issue of the journal SLEEP, tracked the sleep duration, glucose dysregulation, and hormonal regulation of appetite in 27 normal weight, 30- to 45-year-old men and women. Participants provided fasting blood draws, and they were studied under two sleep conditions: Short (4 hours) or habitual (9 hours). Short sleep increased total ghrelin levels in men but not women and reduced GLP-1 levels in women but not in men, a sex difference that has not been reported before. The results suggest that the common susceptibility to overeat during short sleep is related to increased appetite in men and reduced feelings of fullness in women.

"Our results point to the complexity of the relationship between sleep duration and energy balance regulation," St-Onge said. "The state of energy balance, whether someone is in a period of weight loss or weight gain, may be critical in the metabolic and hormonal responses to sleep restriction."

According to the authors, this is the largest controlled clinical investigation of the effects of sleep reduction on hormonal regulation of food intake. The results support a causal role of sleep duration on energy intake and weight control.

4 million Windows 8 upgrades sold already, says Ballmer

1 day

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced at the company's Build conference today?that more than 4 million Windows 8 upgrades had been sold since?the operating system's official launch on Friday. He also said "tens of millions of copies" had been shipped to partners.

Ballmer said?yesterday?that "preliminary demand" was higher for Windows 8 than it was for Windows 7, but offered no numbers to back up that claim at the time. The 4 million upgrades he announced today give some idea of the OS's success, but putting the numbers in context is actually quite complicated.

Aside from yesterday's remark, Windows 8 sales have not been compared to Windows 7's ? that's?not surprising considering the OS has only been available for a few days. Even when Windows 7 was moving?enough copies?to be considered the fastest-selling OS in history, Microsoft waited several weeks before announcing how sales compared to those of Windows Vista. So it will likely be some time before more solid numbers are announced.

Singling out upgrades complicates things further: People have been registering and qualifying for these reduced-price copies of Windows 8 since June, when new PCs began to ship with the guarantee of a $15 upgrade to the new OS upon launch.

Four million may or may not be considered a large number, depending on how it is interpreted in light of total PC sales. Numbers from Gartner put worldwide PC sales in the third quarter of 2012 (which roughly corresponds to the pre-order and upgrade period for Windows 8) at about 87.5 million. Theoretically, all those PCs qualify for the $15 upgrade. The 4 million represents?a 4.5 percent conversion rate for new PCs in the first ?week ? that sounds low, but these numbers are so early that few conclusions can be drawn.

As for the tens of millions of copies shipped to partners, that comes as no surprise. PC makers are banking on the novelty of Windows 8 to sell dozens of new, touch-enabled PCs and tablets, and in order to ship with Windows 8, manufacturers like Lenovo and Acer will have ordered licenses by the million?? although they will likely offer Windows 7 for some time to come as a budget option.

There are no firm take-aways from Ballmer's numbers, which were likely shared in order to whet the appetite of shareholders, developers and reporters, all eager to know the results of Microsoft's risky experiment in redesigning Windows. The next few weeks should bring more intelligible numbers and the opportunity to compare them, apples?to?apples, with Windows 7's sales.

What Are The Benefits Of Online Personal Or - TotalJointFitness.com

October 28, 2012 by admin?

?

If you want to lose weight, get in shape or improve on your overall fitness after physical therapy, there are many benefits of choosing an online fitness program over a live personal trainer or expensive gym membership to reach your fitness goals. This ?blog post will focus on the most important aspects of online fitness training and why it provides an excellent solution for maintaining your overall health and wellness.

First and foremost, online fitness training is convenient?it is accessible from your home or office at any time of day. In addition, online workouts are interactive and dynamic. If you need guidance or support, you can email the fitness program, and in most cases, receive an immediate answer to your question. Various other tools to enhance your learning and ensure your success are also available at the click of a mouse such as video demonstrations, exercise instructions, live chats and more. Today in the 21st century, there is no reason why anyone cannot take the time to get a personalized workout routine to improve their health.

According to Gary Mathews of http://www.criticalbench.com, ?Losing weight in the confines of your own home at your computer is not only possible, it?s a reality. What I mean is that (sic) you can use the advice that?s given to you through an online fitness consultation to pursue a more productive way of burning off undesired fat and reaching your fitness goals.?

Online fitness training is available at a small percentage of the cost of a personal trainer, making it an affordable alternative for a greater number of people. Further, a personal trainer can typically only offer fitness advice related to his or her individual field of expertise whereas online fitness programs offer the knowledge of numerous highly qualified professionals. An online program can also provide nutrition advice, information on injury prevention and rehabilitation, resources for answers to medical questions, motivational help and more. In addition, online fitness programs are frequently updated, and therefore, provide the latest research and information in the fitness industry.

If you are new to fitness, it is oftentimes difficult to know where to begin, and designing your own fitness program can be very frustrating and time-consuming. An online personal trainer can help you eliminate unnecessary research and confusion by teaching you the most enjoyable method for achieving the exact results you want. And the more customized and enjoyable your fitness program, the more likely you will be to stick with it and enjoy a healthier lifestyle in the long-term.

Note: Always consult with a professional health care advisor before beginning any physical fitness program.

Today?s Nintendo Direct broadcast has shed some light on some additional details for the Wii U and 3DS versions of Monster Hunter Tri, named Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

The Monster Hunter franchise is definitely one of the most successful Capcom productions of the generation with 3 mainline games available on Psp and Wii, an online only spin off called Monster Hunter Frontier online, a fourth mainline game being developed for 3DS and a few Psp spin offs
The series premises are simple yet addicting: as the name suggests, players will become monster hunters, exploring the vast wilderness and fighting gigantic beasts and monsters. What makes the Monster Hunter games so much fun is the way monsters have to be defeated: each monster has a specific weak point players must find out before hoping to have a chance to defeat them. Button mashing won?t get you far in the Monster Hunter games. Each monster has its own weapon and elemental weaknesses too and hunters must be really prepared before each hunt. Once defeated players will collect materials from the dead monster body and use them to make more powerful weapons and armors. Multiplayer mode allows hunters to join together their efforts and it?s definitely one of the series gameplay?s highlights.

The third game of the series, dubbed Monster Hunter Tri, was first released on Nintendo Wii on 2009 to critical and commercial success.
The game was ported last year on 3DS as Monster Hunter Tri G with some added content and general gameplay tweakings.
The Wii U and 3DS versions will be released in the west as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate: today?s Nintendo Direct confirmed that the game?s online multiplayer mode will be free.
Four players will be able to join the hunts together; local multiplayer between the Wii U version and the 3DS one was also confermed.
The good news don?t stop here since all post release DLC of the 3DS version will be included in the WII U version.
Hunters will also be able to choose their ?weapons? outside the game as the Wii U version will be compatible with both the Gamepad and the Pro Controller: the Gamepad will offer some advantages in quick access to inventory and in-game maps.

On a related note, Nintendo Europe announced today that they will be taking care of distribution for the European and Australian markets.

Get your weapons ready hunters: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will launch in the West in March 2013.

Japanese Dessert Recipes: Dive Into Mochi, Dorayaki And Kanten ...

After getting super excited about a mochi kneading machine a few weeks ago, our minds have been stuck on the world of Japanese dessert recipes.

Most of us have probably had ice cream-filled mochi or a scoop of green tea ice cream, but we wanted to dig down into some more traditional and more interesting options. What we found: a lot of red beans. Japanese cuisine uses sweetened adzuki bean paste in more applications than you can imagine. Also ubiquitous, mochi: a glutinous, chewy rice cake that we have fallen completely in love with. Mochi can be a dumpling in a sweet dessert soup, baked, fried, stuffed with green tea cream -- the possibilities begin to feel endless. One last finding: Japanese desserts are some of the most beautiful, meticulously crafted sweets we've ever seen.

We are by no means experts on the subject, only excited, hungry novices. If you have a favorite Japanese dessert that we've missed, please let us know in the comments so that we can go eat it!

Surface RT review: Microsoft tablet mixed blessing

23 hrs.

Surface RT, Microsoft's first foray into personal computing, is a hardware?success, and the company should be proud. Windows RT, the operating system that runs on it, is less of a reason for self-back-patting, however. While it doesn't completely tarnish the Surface experience, it often comes darn near, and it certainly keeps this from being a home run for Microsoft.

The promise of Surface is simple: You get a tablet when you want a tablet, and you get a laptop when you want a laptop. For the most part this is true. You can lounge with your Netflix videos and Kindle books, you can listen to all-you-can-eat music or stream rented movies with integrated Xbox services, using the "Modern" style of navigation that's easy to flip through with a finger.

You also get an Office suite that includes Word, Excel and PowerPoint, along with a surprisingly useful pair of keyboard-and-trackpad options ? the Touch Cover and the Type Cover ? which are sold separately but should be a required purchase for anyone going the Surface route.

Having used the tablet for the better part of a week, for both work and play, on land and in the air, I can say that these two modes can both be satisfactory. In fact, on an airplane, the size of the 10.6-inch-screen tablet is perfect for a tray table, the built-in kickstand makes the whole thing extra stable when watching a movie, and the Touch Cover stays out of sight (adding to stability) when not needed, and flips out easily when you're ready for typing.?

I keep falling in love with the thing, only to be yanked out of infatuation by the recurring appearance of "classic" Windows. It's not just when I launch Office apps, which are not touch friendly and require a mouse/keyboard interaction; it even happens when interacting with the tablet in ways that really don't necessitate the old interface. For instance:

  • Why do I have to go deep into classic Windows to add music to the finger-friendly Xbox Music app?
  • Why are there two control panels, a Windows 8 version and a classic version, with overlapping settings and controls?
  • And if I am forced to interact with Windows of olde, then?why can't I install my own?apps, such as the Chrome browser, or migrate?files from an old Windows PC to this supposedly Windows-endowed machine?

The truth is, I really wish I could be blissfully ignorant of the inner workings of this operating system. The only benefit I see to the classic Windows environment?is the ability to enjoy Microsoft's bread-and-butter productivity apps, so why not just launch them separately, instead of inside faux Windows 7? I am having a hard time seeing why these things must go hand in hand, especially when no other maker of Windows software will be inclined to release its software in this way. (That is, they will either build new apps in the Modern UI, or they will continue to support full Intel-chip laptops and tablets with classic Windows apps.)

OK, I've made the point, and it's not the most original of points. A lot of people are trying to understand Microsoft's keeping-old-Windows-while-fundamentally-reinventing-Windows approach that is Windows 8. It's especially perplexing in Windows RT, where you seriously get zero benefit of classic Windows, but now that I've made that clear, it's time to get back to the tablet itself, and why it really can be so charming.

Let's start with battery life.

Having never met a Windows laptop that didn't die a quiet, lonesome death every time I left it unplugged overnight, I was stunned to see how exceptionally well the Surface RT manages power. Even under heavy use, the battery will carry you at least eight hours, but even more impressive is the fact that if you leave it sitting for hours or even?days on end, the battery will?show little if any signs of expenditure. Even if you have your Exchange email, messaging and all kinds of social feeds on, you can expect very little draw when your screen is off. Better still, the battery charges quickly, and can be completely topped off in two hours.

When it comes to Surface engineering marvels, another is the ultra-suave $119?Touch Cover and its chiclet-key-endowed sibling, the $129?Type Cover. Microsoft has long been a major designer of mice and keyboards, and Panos Panay, the hardware guy in charge of Surface development, came from keyboards, but that still?doesn't prepare you for how elegant a job the company did on this. I hate to say that it's Apple-like in its simple yet high functionality, but there's really no other company that could integrate such an accessory with such grace.

So what is it? A pressure sensitive pad that you type on? What's the big deal? I promise you, get to a Microsoft store on Oct. 26, if only to try this out. The thing is so smart, it knows when you're just resting your fingers on the keys and when you really are trying to get words out. And the popping sounds you hear when you type, while?seeming?corny at first, actually give you the feedback you need to touch type without looking, enough to make you forget that all you're really doing is slamming your fingers down on a fake-suede placemat.

In the end, I think I prefer the mechanical keyboard that is integrated into the Type Cover, but in terms of pure, original engineering, the Touch Cover is the greater accomplishment.

When Microsoft hosted reporters at its campus in order to introduce the Surface tablet, the company gave a great deal of attention to the screen. The gist of the discussion, led by all-around Microsoft Research genius Steven Bathiche, focused on why screen resolution ? in the form of the "retina" displays found on the iPad and other Apple products ? are just one part of a discussion that should involve other factors including screen construction, contrast and graphics processing.?

Bathiche's bottom line: The way we perceive images on an LCD screen can't be boiled down to just one number. He's right that in most cases,?the Surface's screen looks as good or better than an iPad's. Still, when you're looking at straight text, it falls short of the iPad in resolution. If you just want to sit around and read books on a tablet, the full-sized?iPad is still the champ (even?though Apple has to pay for that bonus screen resolution with extra battery juice).

I only have two actual hardware gripes about the Surface RT. They are minor, but worth mentioning.

The magnetic power connector never locks in?without some fiddling, and the wear and tear is already starting to show after just?a week. This comes as a shock given that a) the magnetic Type Cover and Touch Cover lock into the Surface so smoothly with so little coaxing b) the power connector is essentially a ripoff of Apple's MagSafe charging cable, which locks in easily, and c) I haven't had to charge the thing very much!

The other surprising failure is the speaker system. They're not just tinny, as most mobile device's speakers are ? they distort sound when any volume is applied. It was as if, in the midst of all this thought going to every other aspect of the design, the speakers were simply forgotten.

As you use Surface RT, what you see is the robustness and power of something that isn't just an overgrown phone. The way you can view two apps at once ? Twitter and a movie, or a movie and mail, or mail and a photo album ? lends more credence to the idea of not just consuming content but creating it. (And why not do both at the same time?)

If you're a wired person with networked hard drives, Bluetooth speaker systems and DLNA media receivers, you will find that the Surface is built to support all of them, straight out of the box ? though not always without trouble.

The USB port on the side will take your disks and peripherals like OMG a real computer! You can add an HDMI or VGA connection with $40 adapters. And if you value cheap storage like I do, you will be glad to know that you can add a fast 64GB Micro SD card for just $43, so you don't have to regret not splurging on the high-end 64GB model.

And lest you think you caught me in a contradiction, I will state plainly that none of the power features I have mentioned require classic Windows to exist ? some are even found in Android devices.

The next stage for Microsoft isn't actually convincing you to buy this thing. If you have some money and a real fondness for the ways of Windows, you could jump right in and have a good time, and if you're shopping for gifts for your grandma, well, any of the iPads would be a way better bet.

No, the next stage for Microsoft is to drum up so much third-party app support for this thing that everybody's like wow, you can do all that? Because right now, there's a gap between what you can imagine doing on this thing and what developers actually let you do with it.

Ah developers?...?You can practically hear an echo in the Windows 8?app store right now. There's a serious lack of games and, aside from Netflix and Kindle Reader, not much major video, music and book apps.

I am glad to say that NBC News is in there, too, yet while it looks good, most or all of the apps I tried out on the Surface?ran jerkily, without the grace you'd expect given this machine's hardware specs. The conclusion is that nothing has been optimized for Surface RT, and that even developers who have taken the plunge have much work to do before their customers will be happy. It may be a long while before anything great turns up.?

Surface RT, available starting at $499 for a Wi-Fi model with 32GB of storage, should in no way be written off. It may have a hard time catching up to the iPad ??especially now that its entry price is $329?? but when it comes to replacing PCs,?it's the only other tablet that matters. And if Microsoft can get developers fired up ? and hopefully sort out the schizophrenia of the classic Windows/Modern UI experiences ? then it will be following Apple in a way that should be a victory for all of us. It will be a true shame if this thing ends up on the pile of nifty ideas that went nowhere (Zune HD, anyone?), but if it does, we'll know why.

To get a better sense of the Surface RT experience, please watch my video, embedded at the top and bottom of this review.

Teacher's aide suspended after '65 murder revealed

Indiana State Prison

Paula Baniszewski was charged with second degree murder for the death of a 16-year-old girl who lived in her home. She changed her last name to Pace and moved to Iowa where she worked as a teacher's aide. She was recently found out.

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

The Grundy County Sheriff?s Office in Iowa received an ominous voice mail earlier this month: A teacher?s aide at the local high school was a member of an Indianapolis family that tortured and killed a girl in 1965.

Paula Pace, the caller said, was actually Paula Baniszewski, who was 17 at the time of the killings and the eldest of seven children. She started working at the school district in 1998 and was, most recently, an aide to a high school counselor.

Confirming Pace's original identity, the school district suspended her.?

Pace was mostly quiet and kept to herself at work, according to WHO-TV. But in 1965, prosecutors painted her as one of the ringleaders in the torture of Sylvia Maria Likens, a 16-year-old who moved in with the Baniszewskis while her mother was on the road as a traveling entertainer, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Gertrude Baniszewski was a single mother with seven children ? Paula, 17, Stephanie, 15, John, 12, Marie, 11, Shirley, 10 and James and Dennis, 18 months. She needed money and suggested to?Sylvia?s father that Sylvia and her sister Jennie move in ? provided he pay $20 a week.

But when the girls? father failed to pay as promised, Gertrude Baniszewski paddled the girls.

The abuse escalated sharply, and Sylvia bore the brunt of it, most of it in the basement of a home described by the Indianapolis Star as "a rundown, gray frame rental house."

The Baniszewskis beat, belted and burned her. They dropped her into a tub of scalding water, then rubbed salt into her raw skin. They burned her skin with their cigarette butts. (An autopsy revealed burns across her body -- "Everyone but the baby" burned Sylvia, 12-year-old John told police, according to the Indianapolis Star).

Other reports say the family forced Sylvia to strip in front of neighborhood boys and masturbate with a coke bottle.

Gertrude Baniszewski, then 37, and 12-year-old John would force her to eat her own feces.

Five days before she died, according to a 1965 story by the Indianapolis Star, Gertrude Baniszewski ordered one of the neighbor boys to etch, with a three-inch, red hot needle, ?I am a prostitute and I'm proud of it? into Sylvia?s stomach. That was punishment, allegedly, for having spread rumors that the elder two Baniszewski girls, including Paula, were prostitutes.

When Sylvia died after being brutally beaten five days later, her sister, Jennie Likens, whispered to police, ?Get me out of here and I?ll tell you everything.?

The Baniszewskis were tried together and in 1966, Gertrude Baniszewski was convicted of first-degree murder. Paula was found guilty of second-degree murder. Both were sentenced to life in prison in Indianapolis.

John Baniszewski and two other boys ages 16 and 15 were convicted of manslaughter. They were released on parole in 1968.

In 1971, the Indiana Supreme Court overturned the convictions, saying jurors had been prejudiced by publicity and that the trials should have been held separately.

Gertrude Baniszewski was convicted of first-degree murder again at a second trial. She was paroled in 1985, changed her name to Nadine Van Fossan and moved to Iowa. She died in 1990.

Paula, however, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter to avoid another trial.

The Indiana Department of Corrections records indicate she was sentenced in August 1971 to a sentence of two to 21 years. She escaped in 1971 but was recaptured.

Paula, now 64, was released from prison in 1972. She was living in Iowa in the mid-1980s, according to a man who grew up with her three sons. Paula, he said, was also very close with his mother. He asked that NBC News not use his name.

He said he received a Facebook message a month ago, detailing Paula's previous life.

?We?re just sickened by it,? he said.

He doesn?t know who sent him the message but assumes it was someone he knew who opened an account under an alias. He said his family did not approach the police.

Paula was stern, he said, but did not discipline her children physically.

?She took care of the kids. She made dinner every night," he said. "She was like a normal person. If we wanted to go outside and play, she?d let us, and maybe she?d come out and mess around and play, joke around. She seemed like she was having a good life.?

Gertrude Baniszewski moved in with her daughter in the mid-1980s, he said. She was quiet and reserved ? but she also made him nervous.

?She was kind of scary ? her presence was scary,? he said. ?Her eyes were sunken in, and her face was very slender. There was a skeletal impression in her face.?

Sylvia Likens' death at the Baniszewski house has been made into a television drama, "An American Crime," and was the premise of "The Girl Next Door," by Jack Ketchum.?

Private porn pics aren't private for long

2 hrs.

Eighty-eight?percent of homemade pornography, including videos and still images, finds its way onto porn sites, often without the owners' knowledge, a new study concluded.

The study analyzed more than 12,000 sexually explicit images uploaded by young people and found that the great majority of images had been stolen and published to what Britain's Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), which published the study, calls "parasite" websites.

These parasites, exclusively devoted to hosting sexual images featuring young subjects, allegedly obtain their material from anywhere they can get it: lost or stolen cellphones, hacked private accounts on Photobucket, Flickr, or Facebook,? or from chat sites and Tumblr, a blogging platform notorious for the amount of explicit self-published content by high school and college-age students.

In 2011, the now-defunct IsAnyoneUp.com published tens of thousands of stolen Facebook photos submitted by jaded ex-lovers or angry friends.

[Why Teens and Adults Send X-Rated Texts]

"We need young people to realize that once an image or a video has gone online, they may never be able to remove it entirely," Susie Hargreaves, CEO of the Internet Watch Foundation, told the Guardian newspaper in London. "Once an image has been copied on to a parasite website, it will no longer suffice to simply remove the image from the online account."

David Wright, director of the UK Safer Internet Center, agreed with the study and reiterated a warning to youngsters not to send sexually explicit messages via their phones, either.?

"Much of the advice for children and young people is, quite rightly, to not 'sext,'?" he said.

In its report, the IWF features quotes meant to serve as a warning to others to not even make explicit photos. "One explicit image I took when I was young ...? is coming up on the first page of [unnamed search engine]," one quote read.

"Every time I begin to feel good and confident about myself? ... I just remember these pictures and what I did," another quote read.

The people who gave the quotes may be heartened, however, to learn that they're not alone. With camera phones and the ability to posting power in the palm of our hands now, self-made sex photos are easier to make and share than ever before. They can bet they're not alone.

(AP) ? Russell Means, a former American Indian Movement activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee, reveled in stirring up attention and appeared in several Hollywood films, has died. He was 72.

Means died early Monday at his ranch in in Porcupine, S.D., Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said.

Means, a Wanblee native who grew up in the San Francisco area, announced in August 2011 that he had developed inoperable throat cancer. He told The Associated Press he was forgoing mainstream medical treatments in favor of traditional American Indian remedies and alternative treatments away from his home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.

Means was an early leader of AIM and led its armed occupation of the South Dakota town of Wounded Knee, a 71-day siege that included several gunbattles with federal officers. He often was embroiled in controversy, partly because of AIM's alleged involvement in the 1975 slaying of Annie Mae Aquash. But Means also was known for his role in the movie "The Last of the Mohicans" and had run unsuccessfully for the Libertarian nomination for president in 1988.

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to protest the U.S. government's treatment of Native Americans and demand the government honor its treaties with Indian tribes. Means told the AP in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians, and that Native Americans were ashamed of their heritage.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said. "And there was a plethora of dozens if not hundreds of athletic teams that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

The movement eventually faded away, the result of Native Americans becoming self-aware and self-determined, Means said.

Paul DeMain, publisher of Indian Country Today, said there were plenty of Indian activists before AIM but that the group became the "radical media gorilla."

"If someone needed help, you called on the American Indian Movement and they showed up and caused all kind of ruckus and looked beautiful on a 20-minute clip on TV that night," DeMain said.

Means said he felt his most important accomplishment was the founding of the Republic of Lakotah and the "re-establishment of our freedom to be responsible" as a sovereign nation inside the borders of the United States. His efforts to have his proposed country recognized by the international community continued at the United Nations, he said, even as it was ignored by tribal governments closer to home, including his own Oglala Sioux Tribe.

But others may remember him for his former organization's connection to Aquash's slaying. Her death remains synonymous with AIM and its often-violent clashes with federal agents in the 1970s.

Authorities believe three AIM members shot and killed Aquash on the Pine Ridge reservation on the orders of someone in AIM's leadership because they suspected she was an FBI informant. Two activists ? Arlo Looking Cloud and John Graham ? both were eventually convicted of murder. The third never has been charged.

Means blamed Vernon Bellecourt, another AIM leader, for ordering Aquash's killing. Bellecourt denied the allegations in a 2004 interview, four years before he died.

DeMain, an Indian journalist who researched the case, said AIM's leaders know who ordered Aquash's killing but have covered up the truth for decades.

Also in 1975, murder charges were filed against Means and Dick Marshall, an AIM member, in the shooting death of Martin Montileaux of Kyle at the Longbranch Saloon in Scenic. Marshall served 24 years in prison. Means was acquitted.

In addition to his presidential bid, Means also briefly served as a vice presidential candidate in 1984, joining the Larry Flynt ticket during the Hustler magazine publisher's unsuccessful bid for the Republican nomination.

But Means always considered himself a Libertarian and couldn't believe that anyone would want to call themselves either a Republican or a Democrat.

"It's just unconscionable that America has become so stupid," he said.

His acting career began in 1992 when he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans." He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in his autobiography, admitting to his frailties and evils but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Means death came a day after former U.S. Sen. George McGovern died in Sioux Falls at the age of 90. McGovern had traveled to Wounded Knee with U.S. Sen. James Abourezk during the 71-day takeover to try to negotiate an end.

"I've lost two good friends in a matter of two to three days," Abourezk said Monday morning. "I don't pretend to understand it."

Ohio voter fraud billboards to come down, sponsor stays unnamed

CLEVELAND (Reuters) - More than 140 billboards in Ohio and Wisconsin warning of the criminal consequences of voter fraud will be taken down starting on Monday after the sponsor chose to remove them rather than reveal its identity, the billboard owner said.

The billboards, which show a large judge's gavel and read "Voter Fraud is a felony - up to 3 ? years and a $10,000 fine," went up primarily in low-income minority neighborhoods in early October, just weeks before the November 6 elections, and were immediately criticized by voter rights groups as an attempt to intimidate minority voters.

The sponsor was not identified on the billboards owned by Clear Channel Outdoor Holdings Inc. The company said this was a violation of its policy against anonymous political ads.

After discussions, the sponsor, whom Clear Channel Outdoor has called a "private family foundation" but declined to name, "thought the best solution was to take the boards down, so we are in the process of removing them," the company said in a statement.

Crews on Monday will begin taking down 30 billboards in Cleveland, 30 in Columbus and 85 in Milwaukee, Jim Cullinan, vice president of corporate communications for Clear Channel Outdoor, told Reuters.

Cleveland City Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland, one of the most vocal critics of the billboards, told Reuters on Sunday: "Needless to say I'm happy they will be taken down but I want to know who was behind this in the first place."

In response to the outcry, Clear Channel Outdoor donated 10 billboards around the Cleveland area that read "Voting Is a Right. Not a Crime!"

Russia to keep Georgia territorially divided: Saakashvili

DUBAI (Reuters) - Russia will stop Georgia trying to reunite with two breakaway states even after a parliamentary election won by a coalition led by a politician seen as having warmer ties with Moscow, outgoing Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said on Monday.

Russia, which has had no diplomatic relations with Georgia since the two fought a brief war over separatist South Ossetia in 2008, has reacted positively to the October 1 victory of Bidzina Ivanishvili's coalition.

Ivanishvili, who made much of his estimated $6.4 billion fortune in Russia, has said he wants to begin to repair relations with Moscow, but Saakashvili, whom the Kremlin has cast as a figure of hate, said he would face an uphill struggle.

"The basic things don't change and the basic thing is that Russia will fight with us over our territory," Saakashvili told reporters in Dubai on the sidelines of the World Energy Forum.

Russia, which dominated Georgia for centuries until the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, has said it isn't prepared to discuss the status of the two breakaway regions - Abkhazia and South Ossetia - which it recognized as independent states after its war with Tbilisi four years ago.

"The first thing that they said is that they are not going to change it, no matter who is in government in Georgia, so that already puts the new government in an incredibly difficult situation," said Saakashvili.

"It doesn't depend on personalities, who is in charge of Georgia, it's really a matter of principle of what Russian policy is and Russian policy is to encroach upon the independence and territorial integrity of its neighbors."

Russia rejects accusations of territorial meddling, saying it intervened in South Ossetia in 2008 to protect its own citizens who live there from what it said was an attempt by Saakashvili to storm it by force.

Saakashvili said during the election campaign that he thought Ivanishvili, 56, would favor Russia over the West. Ivanishvili has denied that but has said he is better placed to build bridges with Moscow.

However, he has also promised to continue Georgia's long drive for deeper integration with NATO and the West, a move that would be likely to upset Russia.

Saakashvili, who has styled himself as a major U.S. ally, said he plans to work with Ivanishvili to ensure a smooth transition of power and hopes to take Georgia a step closer to NATO membership before he leaves office next year.

"The last condition of NATO was that the elections should be free and fair," said Saakashvili. "As they were, they have been treated as fair by everybody, so now Georgia should get a reward for that."

UN envoy presses for Syria cease-fire in Damascus

(AP) ? The international envoy to the Syria conflict pressed his call for a cease-fire with Syrian officials during a visit to Damascus on Saturday while violence continued throughout the country unabated.

Lakhdar Brahimi, who represents the U.N. and the Arab League, has appealed for a truce between rebels and President Bashar Assad's forces for the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins Oct. 26. Brahimi arrived in Damascus Friday after a tour of Middle East capitals to drum up support for the cease-fire, which he hopes will pave the way for a longer-term truce.

A range of countries including Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Germany have thrown their support behind the idea, but neither the Syrian government nor the rebels have signed on.

Brahimi met Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem on Saturday and was expected to hold talks Assad on Sunday.

A Foreign Ministry statement released after Saturday's meeting did not mention the proposed truce, but said the two men discussed "objective and rational circumstances to stop the violence from any side in order to prepare for a comprehensive dialogue among the Syrians."

Brahimi did not speak to reporters.

Syrian government forces and rebels have both agreed to and then promptly violated internationally brokered cease-fires in the past, and there is little indication that either is willing to stop fighting now.

Clashes flared around the country on Saturday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported more than 40 civilians and rebel fighters killed as well as more than 20 government soldiers.

Anti-regime activist say more 33,000 people have been killed since the anti-Assad uprising started in March 2011.

Damned right, they do: International monitors at US polling places ...

Socialize RWV:

Get these sorry-assed U.N. bastards out of the country. Send them home to try and fashion a form of democracy half as good as ours, before allowing them to sit in judgment on any thing. This is absolutely insane.

United Nations-affiliated election monitors from Europe and central Asia will be at polling places around the U.S. looking for voter suppression activities by conservative groups, a concern raised by civil rights groups during a meeting this week. The intervention has drawn criticism from a prominent conservative-leaning group combating election fraud.

The request for foreign monitoring of election sites drew a strong rebuke from Catherine Engelbrecht, founder and president of True the Vote, a conservative-leaning group seeking to crack down on election fraud.

?These activist groups sought assistance not from American sources, but from the United Nations,? she said in a statement to The Hill. ?The United Nations has no jurisdiction over American elections.?

The observers, from countries such as Germany, France, Serbia, Belarus, Ukraine and Kazakhstan, will observe voting at polling places and other political activity.
