Troy Mayor Janice Daniels has said that being gay is dangerous.
The embattled Daniels is facing a recall effort for criticizing New York's decision to legalize gay marriage.
The Tea Party favorite wrote in a June 25, 2011 Facebook status update: ?I think I am going to throw away my I Love New York carrying bag now that queers can get married there.?
Daniels refused to apologize, saying at the time: ?I firmly support marriage as being defined as between one man and one woman and I am not going to change my position.?
Daniels appeared on Charlie Langton's morning show Wednesday on Talk Radio 1270 to explain her side of the story.
?I made that comment before I even considered running for mayor,? she said of the Facebook post.
?What I said while I was mayor .. I was in a business meeting, I come from a business perspective ? I said that I would bring a doctor into a meeting that would say that the homosexual lifestyle is dangerous. Had I been with a group of smokers I might have said I would like to bring a doctor into this meeting to say that smoking is dangerous,? CBS Detroit quoted Daniels as saying on the show.
Daniels added that she ?had no opinion? on whether being gay is more dangerous than smoking.
According to the Detroit News, 7,985 valid signatures are needed to force a recall election. Organizers turned in 9,300 on Tuesday.
