Alco Stores says cold weather hit its 1Q sales

ABILENE, Kan. (AP) -- Alco Stores Inc. said Thursday that its first-quarter sales were hurt by wintry weather in the Midwest.

Alco said sales from continuing operations rose about 1 percent to $116 million in the quarter ended May 5 compared to the same period last year. At locations open at least a year, however, sales fell 2.2 percent. The figures exclude revenue from fuel sales.

Sales at locations open at least a year are considered an important measurement of retailer health because they exclude results from stores that have opened or closed in the last year.

Sales were hurt by colder-than-usual weather into April. Alco said most of the decrease in its sales came from seasonal categories like outdoor living, gardening, sporting goods, and menswear.

Alco has 217 stores in 23 states selling home furnishings, outdoor products, electronics sporting goods and clothing. Its shares rose 2 cents to $9.17 in afternoon trading.
