Dennis Rodman sentenced in family court

(AP) ? Flamboyant former NBA star Dennis Rodman was sentenced in family court Tuesday to 104 hours of community service on four counts of contempt for failing to pay child support.

Court Commissioner Barry Michaelson also placed Rodman on three years of informal probation. The sentence includes the condition that Rodman pay current child and spousal support obligations.

"My suggestion is to use your talents as a motivator, as a fine, fine athlete and as a fine person to assist others in need," Michaelson told the retired basketball player.

The sentencing put an end to one of the disputes in the long running case, which began when Rodman's now-ex-wife filed for divorce in 2004. But Rodman still faces additional contempt charges and allegedly owes back child support in an amount that Michelle Rodman's attorneys say exceeds $800,000.

On Tuesday, the towering former star rebounder said he'd do whatever community service was required near his home in Florida, possibly working with children, and did not begrudge his former wife.

"It's all about the kids," Rodman, 51, said of the ex-couple's two children after the hearing. "It does suck the fact that it had to come to this."

Rodman was found guilty of the four counts of contempt last year for child support owed in 2009 and 2010.

Rodman's attorney Linnea Willis said the four charges stemmed from a period of time when he was expected to pay $50,000 a month in child support. That amount has since been reduced ? to $4,500 for child and spousal support ? and Rodman is now current on those obligations, she said.

Rodman ? known for his wild behavior, Technicolor hair and his rebounding skills ? married in 2003. For years, he and his former wife have been feuding over custody and support of their children, ages 10 and 11.

After Tuesday's hearing in family court in Orange County, Michelle Rodman declined comment. Her attorney, Jack Kayajanian, said he was pleased with the judge's ruling and an award of $32,500 in attorney's fees.

The outstanding disputes over back child support and additional contempt charges will be addressed at a hearing on June 22.

Willis has claimed that Rodman owes far less money in back child support than his ex-wife's attorneys allege.

Court documents filed earlier this year indicated that Rodman was "broke." His tax return from 2010 shows he earned roughly $150,000, but his financial manager said he owes significant amounts in back taxes. She also said Rodman's alcoholism has tarnished his image and made it difficult for him to obtain corporate endorsements and other work.

Rodman was a bad-boy star of the Detroit Pistons and won three NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls. He also played for the Los Angeles Lakers, and lived in California's affluent Orange County before moving to Florida. He was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame last year.

Rodman dated Madonna, was married briefly to Carmen Electra, and gave loud parties that led to frequent run-ins with the law when he lived in Newport Beach.

'Eat your vegetables!' New book redefines how to raise healthy eaters

'Eat your vegetables!' New book redefines how to raise healthy eaters [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 29-May-2012

How do you get a picky young eater who refuses everything to like fruits and vegetables? How do you get children to try nutritious foods when all they want is something sweet or salty? How do you raise healthy eaters without constant mealtime struggles?

In her new book, "'Eat Your Vegetables' and Other Mistakes Parents Make: Redefining How to Raise Healthy Eaters" (Healthy Learning, May 2012), registered dietitian Dr. Natalie Digate Muth, a pediatric resident at Mattel Children's Hospital UCLA and mother of two, provides parents with a step-by-step plan to help kids embrace fruits, vegetables and other healthful foods without battles, bribes and coercion.

The strategies, tailored to a child's age and development level, are based on scientifically proven research and are accompanied by real-life anecdotes and expert advice.

"As parents, we all struggle with how to get our children to actually want to eat a healthy, balanced diet," Muth said. "As a formerly obese child, a mother of a once-picky eater and a pediatrician acutely aware of the epidemics of obesity and inactivity in our children, I am highly motivated to help children and parents work together free of mealtime battles to adopt healthy eating and activity habits."

The book helps parents assure healthful nutrition for kids of all ages. And while some of the strategies might be surprising, they work, Muth said. Parents will not only learn what exactly constitutes a healthy eating plan at various ages and stages, but they'll also discover tips and tricks to get kids to actually want to eat healthy. Among the topics:

  • Learning the (reverse) psychology of getting kids to eat healthy.
  • Why the "clean plate club" contributes to childhood and adult obesity.
  • How using food as a reward causes more long-term damage than short-term parental sanity.
  • How subtle marketing and packaging tactics are designed to sabotage healthy eating habits.
  • Learning effective strategies to get the young "couch potato" up and moving.

Each chapter is followed by simple, kid-friendly recipes developed by Dr. Mary Saph Tanaka, a pediatric resident at UCLA and a talented amateur chef, which help parents turn the information contained within the chapters into action starting with the next meal or snack.

"'Eat Your Vegetables'" is a pediatrician- and mom-tested guide to help parents and caregivers raise healthy food eaters for life," said Dr. Tanya Altmann, a pediatrician, mother and book author. "With many of today's children being raised on fast-food nutrition and couch-potato fitness, Dr. Muth gives parents direction in this step-by-step guide for shaping a child's psyche to help them embrace and enjoy fruits and vegetables."

Simple Facts about Outdoor Cover Pros - Home-improvement ...

Everyone loves to have picnics, whether it?s with families or friends. Aside from the fact that it promotes quality time, this also allows people to shy away from the usual meals indoors. You can start by investing in outdoor covers pros, especially if your grill is openly exposed, and you don?t want to destroy it or have it covered in blankets of dust and other debris. You want to see to it that it remains functional, so that you can still use it to cook food. Aside from your grills, these things can also cover furniture and other things that you have outdoors. If you want to learn more about it, here are some simple facts about an outdoor cover.

It is a known fact that you can?t keep everything indoors. Some of your things will have to be kept outside, so you have to make sure that you secure and take care of them well, so that they can remain intact and functional.

You have to take these things seriously, especially if you have invested a lot of money to buy it.

If you want to buy grill covers, you have to make sure that you have the appropriate measurements that you need. There are different types of covers that are available in the market. Most of them are in standard sizes, but if you want, you can ask a store to customize sheets for you.

Try to look around and look for fabrics that have high quality. Vinyl is quite famous, because it can stand any weather conditions. It?s also convenient to use, because they come in different colors that will make your patio look more attractive. Going for cheap ones that will easily break is obviously a waste of money, so make sure you consider these things when making your decision.

Furniture is quite sensitive to direct sunlight, rain and permanent damage that are caused by your pets or other animals living nearby. If you want to make sure that everything is secured, list down all of the things that need to be covered. Also take time to measure the furniture, so that when you go around to shop, you will not get the one with the wrong measurements. Some outdoor cover pros include those for chairs, lounges, tables, and many more.

You can also make sheets on your own, but make sure that the material of your fabric can protect your furniture. If you use normal fabrics, there is a big chance that it won?t serve its purpose, and your efforts of customizing each one for your furniture will be useless.

Outdoor cover pros are a good investment, especially if you have spent a lot of money on your grills and other outdoor furniture. You want to make sure that your things are well protected by efficient sheets. Make sure that you follow the right way on how to take care of the sheets and furniture, so that you can use them for a long time.

Labor unions given new protection for communications with workers ...

By Justin Snow
Justin@MarylandReporter.com

Senator Brian Frosh

Senator Brian Frosh

Beginning this fall, confidentiality privileges long enjoyed by attorneys and their clients will be extended to labor organizations and their members, raising concerns that these new protections could interfere with federal law.

One of hundreds of bills that came across Gov. Martin O?Malley?s desk for his signature earlier this month, the new law will protect union representatives from having to disclose information received in confidence from an unhappy union member during grievance proceedings.

According to the bill?s sponsor, Sen. Brian Frosh, D-Montgomery, the new law will extend the confidentiality clause applied to relationships between physicians and patients, psychologists and patients, clergy and parishioners, and attorneys and clients to unions and employees. Certain information disclosed under these relationships are protected as confidential by one of the oldest parts of common law.

First time for new protections

Much as in those protected relationships, communication pertinent to a criminal proceeding is not protected nor is communication that reveals the intent to inflict harm on another individual. Nevertheless, the new law remains a broad protection extended to labor unions for the first time in the state.

During Senate debate in March, Frosh disputed Republican attacks that the bill was unfair to business owners and should be extended to them as well rather than just unions and their representatives.

?This bill is not about protecting the union,? Frosh argued, ?it?s about protecting the employee.?

Frosh said a union representative is acting on behalf of employees and their grievances before management, which is not the case in a relationship between employers and their employees.

Supporters have said the extended protections will allow employees to utilize unions without fear that their words could threaten their job.

The bill was approved by the Senate and House of Delegates along party lines, with the majority of Republicans opposing it.

For employers, the new law, which will go into effect Oct. 1, presents a series of new regulations as to how they deal with labor unions and their members. There are exceptions to what information is protected when an employee takes a grievance to a union representative, including certain information a union is required to disclose under federal law. But no case has yet found its way before a judge for interpretation by a Maryland court.

Business group objected

The Maryland Chamber of Commerce.raised questions about the scope of the state law,

Although the law includes a ?savings clause,? which prohibits the state law from trumping federal rules, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce believes it will still conflict with federal law regulating a union?s duty to furnish information to an employer.

?The ?savings clause? only complicates matters and will force employers to file charges against a union, and thrust arbitrators, administrators, and courts into matters that are directly regulated by the [National Labor Relations Act],? the Chamber said in a statement explaining their position.

Gary Simpler, an attorney who focuses on labor law and is a partner with a firm that advises the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, echoed concerns that the state may be stepping into territory regulated by federal law.

?Generally, we?re not looking to the union to provide us information for our cases, but there could be instances where this statute would interfere,? Simpler said, adding that it wouldn?t be the first time the state has passed legislation interfering with federal labor rules.

Asked whether the extended protections would impact his practice, Simpler predicts the new law?s impact will be modest, but not nonexistent.

According to Simpler, the new protections could draw out legal proceedings and put employers at a financial disadvantage.

?There could be instances where the union does have access to information that they?ve obtained from the [employee] that would be important in helping the employer make an informed decision,? said Simpler. ?If they had the information they might have made a different decision or resolved the case much quicker than when they only learned about the information at the hearing.?

This year, more than 577,000 people in the U.S. will die from cancer.

Yet, we know how to save lives from cancer. In fact, more than half of all cancer deaths could be prevented.

The evidence is clear:
-- Cancer research leads to the medical breakthroughs that save lives.
-- Cancer prevention and early detection programs help catch cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages, reducing suffering and saving lives.

Tell Congress: It's time to make fighting cancer a national priority!

Insist that your Members of Congress speak out against cuts to cancer research and prevention programs. Ask them to become a leader in the movement to eradicate this terrible disease.

Health Canada slow to move against alcoholic energy drinks

OTTAWA ? Health Canada isn't ready to crack down on pre-mixed alcoholic energy drinks, despite a long-standing request from government inspectors for direction on what "action can be taken against these products," internal records show.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency pressed Health Canada for a decision last year, after fielding a complaint from the Association of Canadian Distillers last May about alcoholic beverages that market themselves as providing an energy boost. The association said in addition to being deceptive and misleading, that given Health Canada's classification of alcohol as a depressant, "these marketing practices also have serious potential negative health consequences."

Minutes of a July 2011 meeting of food inspectors at which the complaint was discussed, released to Postmedia News under access to information, said "CFIA needs clarification on stronger regulatory basis on which action can be taken against these products," saying there are labelling and composition "concerns because the product is being represented as an energy drink."

Health Canada says a new guidance document for industry and government inspectors is still a work in progress, but confirmed Friday it will provide clarity on both the use of caffeine-containing ingredients in these products and address the use of the term "energy" to market them.

"This is an implied health claim because it is generally recognized to refer to a stimulatory or 'energy boosting' effect. The guidance is important in order to ensure that labels for these products are not misleading for consumers," Health Canada said in a statement.

The department, which establishes rules to be enforced by CFIA, has been wrestling with the issue as far back as 2009, when the agency asked Health Canada to spell out in a "transparent" way its position on pre-mixed beverages marketed as alcoholic energy drinks, given the department's public messaging not to mix regular energy drinks and alcohol.

Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant and caffeine is a stimulant that can make people think they are less intoxicated than they are. Health Canada warns this can lead to prolonged drinking sessions and higher alcohol consumption, increasing health and safety risks.

In 2010, Health Canada issued a letter to liquor control boards across the country, clarifying that pre-mixed alcoholic energy drinks were permitted under current regulations ? so long as the stimulant is derived from an ingredient that naturally contains caffeine.

Regular energy drinks contain synthetic caffeine in addition to caffeine derived from guarana, with total levels of caffeine ranging from 80 mg to 200 mg in each can. The caffeine in alcoholic beverages such as Rockstar + Vodka, MOJO, Octane 7.0 and Poppers Rush 7%, is derived from guarana, and the products are represented as providing an energy boost or being a source of energy.

In an interview, C.J. Helie, executive vice-president of the Association of Canadian Distillers, said his organization believes this contravenes a key section of Canada's labelling rules because any representation that an alcoholic drink is a stimulant, boosts energy, or has stimulative properties is incompatible with alcohol's core characteristic as a depressant.

Helie said the health issue is as pressing as the commercial aspect of the dispute.

"How do you convince consumers that it's a risky behaviour if they think it's being sold legally in every corner store in Quebec? That's the crux of the issue."

For example, Blue Spike Beverages, based in Montreal, says its MOJO "alternative alcoholic beverage," available in Quebec convenience stores and some liquor board stores outside Quebec, was developed because young people started "mixing spirits and energy drinks. This is how the new market segment of alcoholic energy drinks was born."

Meanwhile, Blue Spike's calls its "Octane 7.0 alcohol + energy drink" a "revolutionary product which combines 7% alcohol with 80 mg of caffeine and is designed for consumers who want an alcoholic drink with all the kick an energy drinks packs!"

Helie said Health Canada has to find a way to respond more quickly, even when facing a complex regulatory issue.

"I think some companies recognize that the brand cycle is now faster than the regulatory response cycle. They take a bet they can bring something in which either skirts the edges or even goes way over the edges and they can get in, make some money and get out before the regulator has an opportunity to respond," said Helie, adding he's "obviously frustrated" it's taking so long to resolve.

A new report by the Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse and the Centre for Addictions Research of British Columbia at the University of Victoria, released Thursday, said sales of pre-mixed alcoholic energy drinks are way up, rising 296 per cent between April 2005 and 2010.

President Obama Not Actually a 'Twoosh Master'

In a video posted online yesterday, Obama took credit for tapping out a perfect, efficiency-maximizing 140-character long tweet (apparently, a 'twoosh') about green energy during a Thursday Twitter Q&A session. Hate to burst your bubble POTUS, but we see an extra space after 'wind' and an extra period right at the start. And isn't "bio fuels" all one word? So, really, it should only be 137-characters long. Female Entrepreneur Revitalises Business and Finds Work-Life Balance with Experienced Business Coach

SYDNEY, Australia May 2012 ? Michelle Mills, Managing Director of Serviced Offices International, knew she needed to revitalise her business, get energy back into it and change the way she managed staff. She had been working in the business for 10 years and lost the passion for it. She could see that she needed to step away from her hands-on managerial position to a leadership role but didn?t know how to do that and what systems and procedures were needed to enable that change.? www.quidditybusiness.com.au/

Michelle found her answer in David Solomon, Business Performance Strategist and Director of Quiddity, who is passionate about providing business advice to women entrepreneurs. Quiddity provides mentoring and business coaching services for women business owners to help them succeed in business and in life. David makes it possible for women to find a business or career that they love, spend more time with their loved ones and still have some ?me time?.

?I am variously an enabler, a catalyst, a teacher, a coach, a mentor, a facilitator and a new pair of eyes and ears,? says David. ?I make no assumptions about the potential or limitations of my clients so I listen very carefully and absorb their needs, values and aspirations. I trust my instincts, skills, experience and intelligence as tools that can help create success. I also have a huge (and growing) toolbox of methods and ideas to share. I love to learn, and I draw on a wide variety of sources to find ideas that really work for my female entrepreneur clients"

Michelle says, ?It can be totally invaluable to have this additional input from someone with expertise that can also see the business in a very objective manner and to have the ability to brainstorm and get access to someone with valuable knowledge and experience. However it is also important to select the right coach for your specific needs and ensure that they take the time to really understand you, your business and what your purpose is.?

?I chose David as he had taken the time to really understand me, so that he was aware of my strengths and weakness before we even started and he took the time to get to the core of the problem, before even starting the coaching.?

Quiddity enables David to work one-on-one with creative female entrepreneurs ?stretched-too-thin? in their small to medium businesses and foster, in Michelle?s words, ?new energy, new goals, confidence in expressing the company?s values and real conviction in the service and product that we provide to our clients.? www.quidditybusiness.com.au/

Our Week In Technology : Facebook's Rocky IPO Road & Xbox 720 Tasty Titbits

What caught our eyes in ITProPortal towers

Facebook Goes Public

Facebook's IPO and the drama that followed has been this week's biggest news. The world's largest social networking service, which is quickly approaching its billionth registered member milestone, saw its shares debut at $38 before going through what can only be described as a fairly rocky journey over the next four days.

Facebook's shares currently trade at $31.80, a whopping 16.67 per cent off the top value, and according to Google Finance is on a downward trend. The company is currently valued at $68.11 billion, significantly less than the $104 billion figure quoted just before it went public.

After all the pre-IPO excitement, what happened afterwards has raised a few questions about Facebook as a business overall.

First, there are signs that advertising on Facebook is not performing as well as initially thought. US car giant GM pulled out of a $10 million deal with Facebook because, as the global CMO told the Wall Street Journal, paid ads on Facebook simply don't work (although the company still spends close to $90,000 a day - around ?50,000 - on content produced for the site). Other companies seem to agree too. GM's rivals like Hyundai, Kia, Nissan all but echoed GM's concerns about the return on investment associated with Facebook advertising. Ryan Holiday, an online media buyer for American Apparel, all but pulled out of the Facebook advertising programme, cutting his spending on the site from nearly $1 million per year to "a few thousand dollars a month".

Then, there are the rather humbling steps that Facebook had to take as it settled claims in a lawsuit over sponsored stories, where the social network used the names, photos and identities of users to advertise products without their express permission. Given that there are nearly 157 million registered Facebook users in the US (about half the total population), a class action lawsuit could have proved to be devastating for Facebook's attempts to challenge Google in the advertising market.

And last but not least, Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriting financial institution in Facebook's IPO has been hit by a subpoena "in connection with the analyst's discussion with certain institutional investors about the revenue prospects for Facebook". It looks like Morgan Stanley abruptly cut its revenue forecasts for Facebook just days before the company went public. This follows calls by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority for a review of the IPO.

Xbox 720 arriving in November 2013?

For the second time in three months, a rumour has surfaced that puts the release of the Xbox 720 otherwise nicknamed Durango, at the end of 2013, most possibly November. The latest rumour revolves around a contract that was leaked online by the LA Times that showed a developing contract between Activision, Blizzard and Bungie for a new MMO (massively multiplayer online) product called Destiny and refers to the Xbox 720 by name.

The interesting bit is that Destiny is set to launch in November 2013, which suggests that Microsoft's next generation console could be out at the same time. The Xbox 360 was launched in November 2005 and the original Xbox hit the streets in November 2001. So it is likely that 2013 will be the year of the Xbox with potential key dates being the Game Developers Conference (in March), E3 (in June) and the few weeks following Black Friday, which marks the beginning of the lucrative Christmas shopping season in the US.

There has been a slew of wild rumours from unnamed sources claiming that the Xbox 720 will sport a 16-core CPU, two GPUs, a new version of Microsoft Kinect, will be six times faster than the Xbox 360 and will ship without any optical drive and with a Nintendo Wii-U-like tablet style controller.

My take on it is that the Xbox 720 will be the last dedicated gaming console that Microsoft will bring to market. The years ahead are likely to confirm the hegemony of mobile hardware technology and the rise of cloud-based gaming which requires no physical media, while being permanently locked in a stop/start mode, means that a 16-core smartphone in 2015 could be just as powerful as an Xbox 720 and replace it as a gamer's only gaming platform (it still won't have a decent controller though - ed.).

?A Community of Writers? book launch at Fredricksen Library

br>

This week of vacation has afforded me opportunities I would not have had otherwise to get out into the community. Last night, the Fredricksen Library in Camp Hill held a launch party for ?A Community of Writers,? a collection of short stories from Sunbury Press edited by Ann Elia Stewart.

"Community" editor and workshop leader Ann Elia Stewart

The library has been the home of a creative writing workshop funded by David Craumer as a gift from the estate of his wife, Natalie, who had been a longtime reader. Not only is Natalie?s estate funding the workshop, but the fund has been managed so that the principal has been preserved. The twice-a-year workshop is limited to 15 people, and has been an ongoing concern for 10 years.

Robert Craumer telling us about his late wife, Natalie Craumer, and her love of reading and writing.

I had heard about ?A Community of Writers? at the Pennwriters? convention the week before and bought a copy, so the evening gave me an opportunity to put some faces to the names and reconnect with people.

The event on the main library floor was packed, with about 70 people attending. After a reading from five of the writers, we adjourned to another room for a champagne toast, some book-buying and book signings.

A celebatory toast to "A Community of Writers" and its contributors

But it occurred to me, as I stood in the back, eyes closed, listening to the readings, how difficult it is to develop a strong writing voice. The stories were different: a child telling about being forced to ride through the night with her mentally disturbed mother; a fat girl aboard a cruise ship with her beautiful friend; a satire involving God; an account of a girl writing morale-boosting letters to two soldiers in Vietnam; and a barfly enjoying her drink and cigs and looking down on everyone else (imagine Miss Haversham on a bar stool and you?re not too far off).

There were some genuinely funny moments. The scenes were vividly written. They were certainly publishable stories.

Listening to them made me realize that, with the tidal wave of stories out there, the most difficult part of the rewriting process is developing a point of view. It?s probably the one part of the story process that can?t be taught. Details can be researched and provided, there?s all the nouns and verbs in the dictionary that one can find and want. But only the writer can get inside the character?s skin and tell us how they see (or reveal, since sometimes even the characters themselves don?t know) about what they?re experiencing.

It?s like the prison guard in Stephen King?s ?The Green Mile,? talking about ?walking on the skin of the world.? That phrase has stuck with me since I read the series when it came out in paperback, one installment a week. That one line encapsulated, like bouillon, what he saw as his role in the world, and it has stuck with me after all these millions of words since.

Contributor Carol Lauver signing a copy of "Community."

Writing has its pleasures, but publication is its own reward. ?A Community of Writers? contains 25 stories, each only a few pages long. It?s an onion of a book, and as I talked with the writers that night, I learned that several of them have books coming out this year. I?ll be looking forward to seeing what they?ve come up with, knowing that there?s a great local institution that helped speed them on their way.

Two jailed over NZ ship disaster

Two officers of the container ship that ran aground off New Zealand, causing its worst maritime spill, have been jailed for seven months each.

Captain Mauro Balomaga and navigation officer Leonil Relon, both from the Philippines, had previously pleaded guilty to mishandling the vessel and altering ship documents.

The Liberian-flagged MV Rena hit a reef off the North Island on 5 October 2011.

Hundreds of tonnes of fuel oil leaked out, causing widespread pollution.

The oil polluted beaches and killed wildlife including thousands of sea birds as it leaked from the ship aground on the Astrolabe Reef.

'Milestone'

New Zealand officials hailed the decision, saying the ship's officers had to be held accountable for their actions.

"This grounding has had significant consequences for the Bay of Plenty community and the country as a whole," said Maritime New Zealand director Keith Manch.

"Today marks a milestone in the response, which is still under way."

An interim report by the New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission stated that the accident occurred as the crew took shortcuts to meet a deadline to reach port.

Prosecutors said the crew had ignored basic navigation practices and deviated substantially from the approved course as they hurried to get to Tauranga port.

In January the grounded ship broke in two, spilling some 300 containers and debris into the water.

The ship's owner Daina Shipping, a subsidiary of Greek shipping giant Costamare, has also been charged over the discharge of harmful substances.

New Zealand's government has estimated the cost of the clean-up at NZ$130m ($108m, ?68m).
