2013 Ford Escape: Why You Need To Look Beyond Gas Mileage

Ford?s all-new 2013 Escape compact crossover may have only been on sale for a few months, but it is already proving a strong seller at Ford dealerships across the U.S.

On paper, there?s little difference between the gas mileage figures of the entry-level 2.5-liter, four-cylinder Ford Escape S and the more efficient 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine offered as standard on the Escape SE and Escape SEL.

Costing $2,600 less than the Escape SE, losing just 2 mpg combined in gas mileage might make the Escape S seem like the best choice, but? when it comes picking the right Escape for you, it?s important to look beyond gas mileage figures.?

Less power

Because it uses an older, 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated Duratec engine, the Escape S produces 168 horsepower.

That?s less than the 178 horsepower quoted for the 1.6-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged EcoBoost engine offered as standard on the Escape SE and SEL. It's much less than the 240 horsepower quoted for the 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, turbocharged EcoBoost engine offered as an option on the Escape SEL and standard on the Escape Titanium.

It?s also worth noting that both the EcoBoost engines produce peak power at a much lower engine speed, making them less stressed and more refined at higher speeds than the 2.5-liter engine found in the Escape S.

Less torque

More importantly for those wanting to tow or carry large loads, the 2.5-liter Escape S produces far less torque than either the 1.6-liter or 2.0-liter EcoBoost Escapes.

At just 170 foot-pounds of torque, the Escape S can?t match the 184 foot-pounds and 270 foot-pounds offered by either of its EcoBoost engine options.?

There?s also a difference between how the EcoBoost and no-EcoBoost engines deliver that torque.?

In both EcoBoost engines, maximum torque is delivered around 2,500-3,000 rpm. In the 2.5-liter Duratec, peak torque is delivered at 4,500 rpm.?

If you were to compare the Escape S and Escape SE side-by-side, pulling the same load, you?d find the SE both quicker from a standing start, and less stressed to match.

What?s your use?

If you?re just looking to buy a compact crossover to use around town and carry out light-duties like taking the kids to the weekly football practice, the 2013 Escape S might be the car for you.

After all, at $2,600 less, the Escape S more than compensates for the slightly worse gas mileage.?

If you want to tow, carry heavy loads, or plan to use your Escape for longer-distance trips, the benefits of the EcoBoost engine are really worth the extra money.?

Remember, while the 1.6-liter EcoBoost and 2.0-liter EcoBoost models are offered with optional all-wheel drive, it will diminish your gas mileage slightly over an identically-engined, front-wheel drive models.?

While a good option for those who tow a lot -- and need the extra 500 pounds offered by the optional Class II tow package -- the Escape Titanium or optional 2.0-liter Escape SEL won?t reward you with the same gas mileage figures as the 1.6-liter Escape SE and SEL.

For us, the 2013 Escape SE and SEL offer the best value for money, combining good gas mileage and enough power to tow when you really need to.

Ultimately, the choice is down to you, but remember to take some time to figure out which engine option really offers you the best mix of power and economy before you judge the Escape lineup on gas mileage alone.?

We think you?ll thank yourself in the future if you do.

Tokyo court: Samsung didn't infringe Apple patent

TOKYO ? A Tokyo court has ruled that Samsung did not infringe on an Apple patent, in the latest development in the legal battle between the two technology titans.

The Tokyo Districted ruled Friday that the technology used in the South Korean company's smartphones and tablet to synchronize with computers did not infringe on an Apple patent.

This is a separate case from a U.S. lawsuit between the two companies.

Last week, a jury in California ruled that some of Samsung Electronics Co.'s smartphones violated Apple patents. The jury awarded Apple Inc. $1 billion in damages.

Doors in the House How they matter

The positioning, design and make may determine a lot of things about a house. How lit or airy it is, how safe and hygienic it might be etc. But despite the importance that they possess, more often than not, they are overlooked and standardized. People usually do not pay much attention to them. This is strange considering the fact that the first thing that one notices when visiting a home is the door!

But there has been a major turnaround regarding this tendency in recent times. Doors have been recognized as an important part of interior decoration. Various types are being made with varying designs and features to fulfill the various requirements of different customers. Attention is being paid to even the minutest detail such as the doorknob. So now we even have such highly sophisticated doors with self-sanitizing UV doorknobs that kill germs and avoid hands getting contaminated. We also have such stylish and fashionable doors with inbuilt door handles. Even the easy going simple hands free bathroom doors are now available in the market. It is quite clear that a lot of innovation is going into the making to satisfy the varying requirements of customers all over.

Different types of doors (Or as the German term is T?ren )

Indeed when one goes on to explore the different types that are available in the market, one might be dazzled by the amount of choices that might be at hand. There are even doors that can be folded to form emergency earthquake shelters. Different types include standard hinge ones, bypass ones, pocket ones or folding ones. Standard hinge ones shut out all sound and they close off quite securely. Bypass ones can add an element of oomph to the appearance. Foldable ones are handy for closets while pocket ones are a good option for places with little space as they effectively fit in the wall. There are custom sliding ones that can be used in places with odd shapes.

It is thus advisable for customers to understand their requirement thoroughly before they move into the market. Given the range of products that are available in the market right now, it is almost certain that one would find the correct product to suit one's requirements.

Besides design, the other important thing about doors is the material of which they are made. The make should be decided after considering different factors such as the climatic conditions of the particular place. For example if the climate is cold then the providence should be made for the proper insulation, the frames should be tight enough and the material should be used accordingly.

Nowadays there are so many choices available that coming to a proper decision is a process that involves a lot of thought. Too many available choices have made it necessary to research and bag the best possible bargain.

GIMP Is Now Available as a Native App for Mac OS X [GIMP]

GIMP Is Now Available as a Native App for Mac OS XOS X: GIMP is a fantastic free alternative to Photoshop for all desktop operating systems, but on Mac it was a bit of a pain to set it up, because you needed to install X11. Gimp now, however, comes with a standard DMG installer.

Now to install GIMP on your Mac, you just open the downloaded DMG file and, like you do with other Mac apps, drag the GIMP.app to your Applications folder. Easy as pie.

The latest 2.8.2 update fixes some bugs, while version 2.8 added a new interface and features like layer groups, on-canvas text editing, and more.

New antibacterial coating for sutures could reduce infections after surgery

Responding to an urgent need for better antibacterial coatings on surgical sutures, scientists are reporting the discovery of a new coating that is almost 1,000 times more effective than the most widely used commercial coating. Their report appears in ACS' journal Langmuir.

Professor Gregory Tew, who is from UMass-Amherst, and colleagues explain that infection at the site of surgical incisions is one of the most common post-surgical complications that keep patients hospitalized longer and boost hospital bills. The most common antibiotic coating contains triclosan, but its use in many consumer products over the years has led to the emergence of strains of bacteria that shrug off its effects. Triclosan also can be absorbed into the body, raising concerns about possible adverse health effects. Another downside to triclosan: It slows the growth of bacteria, but does not actually kill those already present. That's why the scientists turned to PAMBM, a new substance designed from naturally occurring antimicrobial peptides that can kill a wide range of bacteria. And because of the way it works, PAMBM has a very low chance of causing bacterial resistance and the emergence of so-called superbugs.

The report described laboratory tests in which PAMBM greatly reduced the amount of bacteria compared to triclosan. In a head-to-head test with triclosan-coated sutures, those coated with PAMBM were much more effective against bacteria. "As bacterial resistance to current agents continues to increase and with resistance to triclosan now documented, the discovery of new antimicrobial agents that remain active in biomedical device coatings is essential," say the researchers.

Increased risk of prematurity and low birth weight in babies born after three or more abortions

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? One of the largest studies to look at the effect of induced abortions on a subsequent first birth has found that women who have had three or more abortions have a higher risk of some adverse birth outcomes, such as delivering a baby prematurely and with a low birth weight.

The research, which is published online in Europe's leading reproductive medicine journal Human Reproduction Aug. 29, found that among 300,858 Finnish mothers, 31,083 (10.3%) had had one induced abortion between 1996-2008, 4,417 (1.5%) had two, and 942 (0.3%) had three or more induced abortions before a first birth (excluding twins and triplets). Those who had had three or more induced abortions had a small, but statistically significant increased risk of having a baby with very low birth weight (less than 1500g), low birth weight (less than 2500g), or of a preterm birth (before 37 weeks), or very preterm birth (before 28 weeks), compared to women who had had no abortions. There was a slightly increased risk of a very preterm birth for women who had had two induced abortions.

Dr Reija Klemetti, an associate professor and senior researcher in public health at the National Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki, Finland, who led the research, said: "Our results suggest that induced abortions before the first birth, particularly three or more abortions, are associated with a marginally increased risk during the first birth. However, the increased risk is very small, particularly after only one or even two abortions, and women should not be alarmed by our findings."

Most of the induced abortions (88%) were surgically performed and nearly all (91%) were performed before 12 weeks gestation. The researchers adjusted their findings to take account of various factors that could affect birth outcomes, such as social background, marital status, age, smoking, previous ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages. Multiple births (twins and triplets) were excluded.

The risk of having a baby born very preterm appeared to increase slightly with each induced abortion, but only the risk from two abortions or more was statistically significant.

"To put these risks into perspective, for every 1000 women, three who have had no abortion will have a baby born under 28 weeks," said Dr Klemetti. "This rises to four women among those who have had one abortion, six women who have had two abortions, and 11 women who have had three or more."

Among women who had had three or more abortions, there was a statistically significant increased risk of a third (35%) of having a baby born preterm (before 37 weeks), a two-fold (225%) increased risk of very low birth weight, and a two-fifths (43%) increased risk of low birth weight.

The study also showed a small increased risk of a baby's death around the time of birth. However, the numbers for this finding were very low (1498 births or five per 1000 babies) and so should be treated with caution. In addition, the authors say they might not have been able to fully adjust for all the factors that could affect this result and perinatal deaths are sensitive to social factors such as poverty.

"Our study is the first large study to look at a broad set of perinatal outcomes and to control, at least partly, for the most important confounding factors such as smoking and socioeconomic position," said Dr Klemetti. "However, it is important to say that even though we adjusted for these factors, and also ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages, there might be some confounding for social class that we could not control for. Most probably, this may be related to women's (or some of these women's) way of life, life habits, and sexual and reproductive health.

"Furthermore, this is an observational study and, however large and well-controlled, it only shows there is a link between abortion and some adverse birth outcomes -- it cannot prove that abortions are the cause.

"Finland has one of the lowest rates of induced abortion in Europe*, but even so, a large number are carried out every year. In addition, Finland has good quality abortion and maternity care, and in other contexts, particularly in poorer countries, the situation may be different. For these reasons, even a very small increase in the risk of poor birth outcomes could have significant health implications, as preterm births and low birth weight can have serious, adverse effects on the health and well-being of both babies and mothers.

"We suggest that the potential for increased risks for subsequent births should be included in sex education, especially as there are other, good reasons to avoid induced abortions. Health professionals should also be informed about the potential risks of repeat abortions."

* In 2011 there were 10,108 induced abortions in Finland, which translates to 8.7 per 1000 women aged between 15-49.

The Centered Glass Home Screen [Featured Iphone Home Screen]

The Centered Glass Home ScreenReader Albert put together his own iOS theme, called Sarcina, in an effort to mix simplicity and minimalism with beauty. Here's how he put it together.

I asked myself, how minimalistic could I make my home screen with the original, "Apple-like" rounded icons but keep a certain amount of functionality. Earlier in the day, I had received the theme "Sarif" free from the maker itself, codylg. Graciously accepting the theme, it included the minimalistic status bar and the simple, glass status bar. After a few hours of tweaking and experimenting, I picked out a nice blue, blurry background that would accommodate the color scheme of the icons and created a custom 2x2 icon layout with Iconoclasm and added a glass frame to the background using GIMP to distinguish the center with the dock. To finish the home screen, I added a nice weather and date widget using iWidgets with a custom HTML widget I had received from my friend.

Using Springtomize, I hid the carrier name to save unneeded space. I also hid the battery icon and enabled the battery percentage in its place. The dock icons are centered with the help of iBlank which created 2 blank icons to put at the side of both dock icons.

To put this together, you'll need these tools:

You can see more on Albert's MyColorScreen profile and DeviantART page.

Do you have an awesome, tweaked-into-oblivion home or lock screen of your own that you'd like to share? Go ahead and post it on the #homescreenshowcase forum with a description of how you made it and it may be the next featured home screen.

Branding Your Business

When ambitious men and women with limited resources start a business, the focus is usually on ensuring a quality product or service, and acquiring more capital to keep the business running.

What is set aside is the just as important process of branding. A business without a clear identity will not be successful no matter how much money is poured into it, or how good its product or service is. If people do not understand what a certain business is for, how can they trust it enough to give it their hard-earned money?

Proper branding takes care of this issue by communicating what exactly a business? purpose is to those interested, whether they are potential customers or investors. It can give these important stakeholders a good idea of the company?s products, services, or even ideology. So if the brand is strong and consistent, it can easily inspire loyalty and foster excellence as the standard in the entire business.

Define Your Brand

So how does one go about learning how to brand a business properly? That can be answered by first asking two questions.

  • What is the business? specialty? What must first be understood are the products and/or services that the business offers. It is also important to know whose needs and interests the company is catering to.
  • What does the business stand for? The business must have a clear mission that can be accomplished and founded on solid values.

Based on the answers to these questions, the business can then build a consistent identity for itself, and see if that identity jives with that of its target market. From there, the creation of the brand can come easy. It helps to treat the process as if creating a celebrity?s onscreen persona, where he or she knows how to amplify his or her strengths and improve upon his or her weaknesses to get people?s attention.

Here are four important tips to keep in mind:

1. Design a good logo that is easily recognizable and memorable.

First, it is important to distinguish a logo from a brand. The brand is the all-encompassing identity of a business, while the logo is the actual image, picture or symbol that is used to represent the company.

The logo must facilitate easy association and recall, making consumers easily or automatically recognize what company or product the logo represents. It can be a picture, the company?s name in stylized typography, or a mixture of both words and images. While it has to be unique and original, it is advisable to keep the logo simple. Details such as size, shape, color scheme, and typography must also be considered, and all these must combine into a cohesive whole.

2. Write a brand message with strong impact.

Right after the logo comes the message that gives people a bigger and deeper understanding of the business, without bombarding them with too much information.? It can be a tagline that accompanies the logo or a slogan that appears in advertisement.

It should echo the mission of the business in a brief but striking manner, whether it is something that is already a reality or something that the business aims to achieve. Like the product or service being offered, it has to be something that stands out from the rest of the competition

3. Be true, and stay true.

Once the brand has been established, the business must continue to unfailingly deliver what it promised. If the core values are manifested in the brand message or logo, the actual business practices must also reflect these.

When a business is faced with a crisis, knowing its identity will help direct it to which stance it has to take. It should also be able to accept responsibility to keep the trust of its customers and investors.

4. Be consistent with your brand.

Once you?ve chosen a brand, stick with it. Inconsistency can cause people to be confused and could get in the way of memory and recall. It is harder to remember an identity that is ever changing.

Advertisements and other marketing campaigns, the products, services, online and other media portals (i.e. websites and social media accounts and pages), the culture of the workplace, and how the business communicates with its market must all be in line with the branding. Even small things such as company letters and letterheads, giveaways and uniforms, among others, must contain the business identity through the logo, tagline or slogan, theme or colors.

The Challenge

Building a brand, from the conceptualization to the execution and maintenance, requires time and consistent effort. No brand can stick into people?s minds overnight. What with the hundreds and thousands of businesses, products and services out there, how can a small business establish its own spot and make a lasting impression?

Branding Ideas

Thankfully, the emergence of the new media or the Internet solves a lot of problems, even for small businesses. With its wide reach, lower cost and easy accessibility, it almost evens out the battle ground for businesses, including those that can hire marketing professionals to do the job and those that cannot.

Here are a few proven online branding and marketing tips for businesses:

1. Use varied forms of media.

Writing precise and memorable copy is well and good, but it has its limits. Using more visual forms like photos and videos can engage the audience more. Podcasts can deliver in-depth discussion and analysis of the business and its products.

2. Maximize the power of social media.

Because of the more intimate nature of small businesses, it is easier to build relationships, especially now with the influence of social media.

Facebook, for? instance, can be used as the media center for a business. Diverse content such as photos and videos can be shared, and users can leave their comments and feedback regarding products or services. This is an automatic online feedback and customer service mechanism that can also give consumers a sense of community.

Twitter, on the other hand, can be used for disseminating news and updates regarding the business. It also allows cross-posting with Facebook so this should be taken advantage of to create synergy throughout all platforms.

There are many other social networking sites that can be penetrated for online marketing and branding, each with its own special features and mechanisms. Most of them are free to use.

3. Foster relationships through various means.

Partnering with other businesses can expand the audience reached by the product and/or service.

Starting up contests can also increase interaction with customers, while letting them help promote the business through their engagement.

As the audience grows, even more people will be interested in the business due to the phenomenon of social proof. More interest snowballs to more customers.

Conclusion

The path to success for businesses is directed by branding and the subsequent marketing, but these require a complete understanding of the business? identity. Once this has been made clear, it can create a loyal following that could very well expand at an exponential rate.

With a concise and consistent message delivered in multiple fronts through honesty and familiarity, the brand can take a life of its own in people?s minds, equating something as simple as a logo to incredibly diverse and ultimately beneficial products and services.

Romney to outline 'clear vision' for presidency

(AP) ? His convention speech finished, Republican Mitt Romney planned to outline a "clear vision of a Romney presidency" in a Thursday night address that's likely to touch on the storm bearing down on the Gulf Coast.

Strategists described the speech in broad terms Tuesday and said they had not discussed contingency plans for changing the timing or content of the prime-time address. Hurricane Isaac was expected to slam the Gulf Coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

Romney has largely completed work on the speech after months of preparation, according to senior aide Stuart Stevens, who worked closely with the presidential contender to craft what is likely the most important speech of his political career.

"It'll be a clear vision of a Romney presidency, and very much from his heart about America, and why he wants to be president and what his presidency would be like," Stevens told reporters traveling on the plane that brought Romney and his wife, Ann, to Tampa on Tuesday.

Stevens said the speech, about 40 minutes long, would also include some criticism of President Barack Obama.

"Overwhelmingly, a majority of Americans don't want to vote for this president. You see that over and over and over again," Stevens said. "It's still a choice. There will be an element of that."

Asked whether Romney would address the hurricane in his speech, Stevens said: "I think he'll speak to it, yeah."

Romney and his wife spent much of the weekend rehearsing their speeches near their New Hampshire summer home. Mrs. Romney addresses the convention Tuesday night and her husband will be on hand to watch. Mitt Romney speaks Thursday.

"We're always concerned about people's safety," Ann Romney said when asked about the storm.

Isaac, which delayed the start of the convention by a day, now threatens Louisiana and Alabama as Republicans are set to celebrate Romney's nomination.

Stevens acknowledged that the storm could affect whatever political boost Romney might get from the convention. Candidates typically receive a boost of public support after their party conventions. Polls suggest the race between Obama and Romney is very close.

"This convention's different because of the hurricane," Stevens said, adding that conventions are later in the year than they have been traditionally. "I think if the election were held tomorrow we'd win and win pretty easily."

No comments - The Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives

The fourth Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Intersex (LGBTI) Archives, Libraries, Museums, and Special Collections (ALMS) conference was held in Amsterdam, August 1?3, 2012. Hosted by the Internationaal homo lesbisch informatiecentrum en archief (IHLIA) and held at the Amsterdam Public Library, the conference?s theme was ?The Future of LGBTI Histories?.

IHLIA, the largest LGBTI archive in Europe, is housed on the sixth floor of the main branch of the Amsterdam Public Library, which is the largest public library building in Europe. The IHLIA section of the floor contained LGBTI book displays, including rare items, photographs, artifacts, and other materials. Most of the action took place in the large theatre on the seventh floor, with breakout sessions occurring in rooms located near the collection on the sixth floor.

Almost 150 delegates, from all over the world, participated in the conference. More than forty papers and keynote speeches were delivered in the theatre over the three days, mostly by people involved with small, community-based organizations. A particular theme was the state and growth of LGBTI collections in Eastern Europe, with presentations from Hungary, Poland, and Turkey. Several European countries were well-represented, as were Australia, Britain, Canada, and the United States. Delegates represented collections in many other countries as well, from China to South Africa. The Canadian delegates were Danielle Cooper (York University, Toronto), David DeAngelis and James Miller (Pride Library, Western University, London, Ontario), and Don McLeod and Gordon Richardson (Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives). Don delivered two papers, one on the LGBTI serials collection at the CLGA, the second on the Ernst Maass collection of correspondence and photographs related to Magnus Hirschfeld, discovered in Brooklyn, New York.

Papers and presentations were delivered in themed sessions. August 1 dealt with the experiences of building archives and collections; August 2 highlighted the role of new media and technologies, oral history, and finding hidden materials; August 3 examined forming alliances with mainstream institutions, and closed with ruminations on the future of LGBTI archives and collections.

One excellent feature of the conference was that all papers were posted in advance and delegates were able to attend all the papers, followed by breakout sessions for questions. As well, all speeches and papers were filmed as they were presented and will be made available by IHLIA.

Common themes emerged: the lack of stable financial support for LGBTI archives and collections; challenges in finding volunteer help; relationships between community-based and mainstream institutions; collections growth and storage problems; digitization. There was also some hint of the dangers of engaging in LGBTI library and archival organizing in certain parts of the world, where social, religious, or political forces stifle such work. For example, Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (GALA), at the University of the Witwatersrand, Braamfontein, South Africa, remains the only LGBTI archive on the African continent.

Don and Gordon were able to take a small, private tour of the IHLIA collections, offered by Jack van der Wel, director of IHLIA, including the basement storage areas.

Each day of the conference featured social events, including a tour of ALETTA (Equality Knowledge Institute for Emancipation and Women?s History), an opening reception followed by a boat tour of Amsterdam?s canals, and a mobile Pink Perspectives tour of LGBTI historic sites, ending with drinks at Cafe ?t Mandje, thought to be the oldest LGBTI bar in the world (open since 1927). The conference ended with a wonderful dinner at the Lloyd Hotel.

In past years, the ALMS conference was held in the spring. The Amsterdam conference was held at the beginning of August to coincide with Amsterdam Canal Pride, which occurred the day after the conference. Delegates were able to see this spectacular event, during which more than eighty floats literally floated down Amsterdam?s network of canals.

Jack van der Wel, Lin McDevitt-Pugh, and other members of the local steering committee, as well as volunteers, deserve thanks for organizing a truly memorable, rich, and inspiring conference.

The ALMS baton has been passed to Bryan Knicely and the Stonewall National Archives and Museum, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, who will host the 2014 LGBTI ALMS conference.

Ga. murder case uncovers alleged terror plot

Four Army soldiers based in southeast Georgia killed a former comrade and his girlfriend to protect an anarchist militia group they formed that stockpiled assault weapons and plotted a range of anti-government attacks, prosecutors told a judge Monday.

Prosecutors in rural Long County, near the sprawling Army post Fort Stewart, said the militia group composed of active duty and former U.S. military members spent at least $87,000 buying guns and bomb components and was serious enough to kill two people ? former soldier Michael Roark and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany York ? by shooting them in the woods last December in order to keep its plans secret.

"This domestic terrorist organization did not simply plan and talk," prosecutor Isabel Pauley told a Superior Court judge. "Prior to the murders in this case, the group took action. Evidence shows the group possessed the knowledge, means and motive to carry out their plans."

One of the Fort Stewart soldiers charged in the case, Army Pfc. Michael Burnett, also gave testimony that backed up many of the assertions made by prosecutors. The 26-year-old soldier pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter, illegal gang activity and other charges. He made a deal to cooperate with prosecutors in their case against the three other soldiers.

Prosecutors said the group called itself F.E.A.R., short for Forever Enduring Always Ready. Pauley said authorities don't know how many members the militia had.

Burnett, 26, said he knew the group's leaders from serving with them at Fort Stewart. He agreed to testify against fellow soldiers Pvt. Isaac Aguigui, identified by prosecutors as the militia's founder and leader, Sgt. Anthony Peden and Pvt. Christopher Salmon.

All are charged by state authorities with malice murder, felony murder, criminal gang activity, aggravated assault and using a firearm while committing a felony. A hearing for the three soldiers was scheduled Thursday.

Prosecutors say Roark, 19, served with the four defendants in the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division and became involved with the militia. Pauley said the group believed it had been betrayed by Roark, who left the Army two days before he was killed, and decided the ex-soldier and his girlfriend needed to be silenced.

Burnett testified that on the night of Dec. 4, he and the three other soldiers lured Roark and York to some woods a short distance from the Army post under the guise that they were going target shooting. He said Peden shot Roark's girlfriend in the head while she was trying to get out of her car. Salmon, he said, made Roark get on his knees and shot him twice in the head. Burnett said Aguigui ordered the killings.

"A loose end is the way Isaac put it," Burnett said.

Aguigui's attorney, Daveniya Fisher, did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press. Attorneys for Peden and Salmon both declined to comment Monday.

Also charged in the killings is Salmon's wife, Heather Salmon. Her attorney, Charles Nester, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Pauley said Aguigui funded the militia using $500,000 in insurance and benefit payments from the death of his pregnant wife a year ago. Aguigui was not charged in his wife's death, but Pauley told the judge her death was "highly suspicious."

She said Aguigui used the money to buy $87,000 worth of semiautomatic assault rifles, other guns and bomb components that were recovered from the accused soldiers' homes and from a storage locker. He also used the insurance payments to buy land for his militia group in Washington state, Pauley said.

In a videotaped interview with military investigators, Pauley said, Aguigui called himself "the nicest cold-blooded murderer you will ever meet." He used the Army to recruit militia members, who wore distinctive tattoos that resemble an anarchy symbol, she said. Prosecutors say they have no idea how many members belong to the group.

"All members of the group were on active-duty or were former members of the military," Pauley said. "He targeted soldiers who were in trouble or disillusioned."

The prosecutor said the militia group had big plans. It plotted to take over Fort Stewart by seizing its ammunition control point and talked of bombing the Forsyth Park fountain in nearby Savannah, she said. In Washington state, she added, the group plotted to bomb a dam and poison the state's apple crop. Ultimately, prosecutors said, the militia's goal was to overthrow the government and assassinate the president.

The Army brought charges against the four accused soldiers in connection with the slayings of Roark and York in March, but has yet to act on them. Fort Stewart spokesman Kevin Larson said he could not comment immediately on the militia accusations that emerged in civilian court Monday.

District Attorney Tom Durden said his office has been sharing information with federal authorities, but no charges have been filed in federal court. Jim Durham, an assistant U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia, would not comment on whether a case is pending.
